It’s not even March, and the birds are singing and the tulips are rising. What’s up with that?

Spring temperatures in winter mean your landscaping thinks it’s April instead of what should be the dead of winter. This means we need to dig out some of our garden gear a little earlier than we expected. We need to take care of plants according to the temperature outside, not our iCalendars.

That means watering gardens and foundation plants that are drying out in this spooky warmth. Also, mulch to avoid dehydration (of plants, not you) and pull weeds to protect your home’s curb appeal, and save yourself some grief when the real spring arrives.

Does your landscaping have spring fever? What’s growing that shouldn’t be growing in your yard?

If you want the grass to be greener on your side of the block you might want to consider installing a lawn. But how to decide what type of installation to choose?

Firstly, there are two different installation processes – sod and seed. Do you want to plant grass into the soil or do you want to plant seeds that grass will eventually sprout from? By doing the sod installation you will pay more upfront but will deal with less later. With the seed installation, you can save money in the short-term, but remember, your lawn won’t be ready to go right away and you’ll have to reap what you sow; a seed lawn is vulnerable to erosion and weed growth.

But before you sod or seed, there are some basic steps you must take. First, measure the area you want to install the lawn in and decide what species of grass you should install. This is important because it will depend on how much time you are willing to put into maintaining your lawn. Here in South Lake Tahoe, we at J. Dozier landscaping, recommend using a bluegrass if you are going to be installing sod because it looks great and adapts well to our Tahoe environment.

If you are seeding, the great thing about Tahoe is you can do it any time of season. If the area being seeded is mostly sunny we recommend using a bluegrass seed, if its a shady area we recommend using a fescue, if there is too much shade consider turning it into a garden. In order to plant the seeds you have to buy the appropriate number of seeds for the square footage of your lawn. You can use a seed spreader or scatter the seeds by hand. Water the young seeds as much as possible, once the new grass has filled in cut back on the water and resume standard maintenance. Enjoy!!!
